This medal acknowledges and honours David Isaacs’ enormous contribution to the field of infectious diseases in Australia.

Professor David Isaacs is a pioneer of paediatric infectious diseases, clinical ethics and refugee health for children.

Highly respected and much loved, he was born in London. His father, Alick, discovered interferon and his mother, Susanna Isaacs Elmhirst, was a distinguished paediatrician and psychoanalyst.

Dave is an identical twin – his brother Steve is a child psychiatrist. They went to different schools and once swapped schools for the day, largely unnoticed by teachers and friends. Dave trained in paediatrics in London, Oxford and Sydney and developed a keen interest in paediatric infections and immunology. He moved to Sydney in 1989 to establish the Department of Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children (now, the Children’s Hospital Westmead).

Dave blazed a trail for paediatric infectious diseases in Australia and the region, helping to develop the specialty, the formation of ANZPID, and training, teaching, mentoring and (kindly) examining many. Dave is a polymath, and his far-reaching contributions include immunisation, ethics, and fearless advocacy for refugees and asylum seekers.

Dave has published over 500 papers and 10 books and was editor of the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health for many years.

A devoted father and grandfather, he is a lover of art, theatre, music and sport, and an accomplished musician and tireless raconteur. His warmth, compassion, humanity, and sense of humour are an inspiration to many in Australia and overseas.

This medal will be presented annually at the ASID ASM (commencing in 2025) to an ASID member who has made an outstanding contribution to health or humanity, through service, research, education or advocacy.

  • The prestigious Frank Fenner Award for Advanced Research in Infectious Diseases is named in honour of Professor Frank Fenner, an Australian pioneer of viral research. This award is open to ASID Full or Associate members who have performed a substantial portfolio of original research in Infectious Diseases, and who are currently enrolled in, or have completed, a research higher degree, within the last ten years.
