Can we move closer to a functional cure for chronic hepatitis B?

A major phase 3 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that bepirovirsen, an antisense oligonucleotide targeting hepatitis B virus RNA, helped more patients achieve a functional cure compared with placebo after stopping nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy. While adverse events were more common, the findings represent an important advance in the search for curative therapies for the nearly 300 million people living with chronic hepatitis B worldwide.
